On December 7-8, 2011, Strategic Healthcare Group hosted the third Blood Management University® Program Development Workshop of the year at its campus in Indianapolis, Indiana. Workshop participants had the opportunity to network with over 10 hospitals from across the country, participate in meaningful group discussions and learn through interactive simulation exercises.  In 2 days, participants attended over 10 sessions, enjoyed lunch and dinner mingling, and even made time to tour the city Christmas lights.

The goals of the workshop were to:

  • Provide participants with the training, tools, and resources needed to develop and maintain a comprehensive blood management program
  • Prepare Blood Management Coordinators/Transfusion Safety Officers to optimize the safety of hospital transfusion practices through ongoing education, evaluation and process improvement

Hot topics discussed:

  • Defining the role of a transfusion safety officer
  • Communication and teamwork strategies for lab and clinical staff to improve safety & efficiency
  • Building effective blood utilization committees

"After being at the training for 2 days, I've seen that it's going to impact so many areas in our organization and its a great initiative. It's very exciting and eye-opening."

“We’re excited to work with Strategic Healthcare Group because we’ve realized that transfusion processes are not really well understood by hospital staff and by working with Strategic and setting our initiatives and goals, we can improve our processes and improve patient care. It’s a great opportunity to be proactive and good stewards of our blood supply.”

“The other added bonus to Strategic Healthcare Group is the availability of resources. Not having to do our own and create our own has been awesome.”

The next Program Development Workshop will be March 28-29, 2012, at Blood Management University®. Interested blood management program champions should contact  This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .
