What is a Transfusion Safety Officer?

In recent years we have witnessed the rise of the Transfusion Safety Officer role in blood management programs across the US. There are variations on the title such as Blood Management Coordinator or Transfusion Safety Coordinator depending on your region of the country or the structure of a healthcare organization. Regardless of the title, the role itself has become a critical part of the  success of any blood management program.

What is the importance of a Transfusion Safety Officer’s role?

The role requires a broad knowledge of evidence based transfusion practices and several technical skills related to transfusion safety; however, leadership qualities and effective communication skills are some of the most important charecteristics necessary. TSO's need to be capable of orchestrating organizational change efforts and collaborating with professionals in every department and nearly every profession within the hospital to improve transfusion practice.

What are the responsibilities of a Transfusion Safety Officer?

The Transfusion Safety Officer collaborates with clinical and technical personnel to ensure the safe, efficient, and evidence-based use of blood products and blood related resources throughout the hospital.

This is accomplished in a multidisciplinary, multimodal manner through:

  • broad educational strategies,
  • utilization oversight efforts,
  • collaborative process improvement activities focusing on patient safety gaps related to transfusion.
