A STRATEGIC APPROACH TO BLOOD MANAGEMENT
The Strategic Blood Management™ System

Overview

Designed by Dr. Tim Hannon and the recognized experts from Strategic Healthcare Group LLC, the highly acclaimed Strategic Blood ManagementSystem uses a proprietary Accelerated Change Management (ACM) process in a logical three phase approach to quickly shift the attitudes, behavior and culture of the organization towards better blood use. Hospitals using the Strategic Blood Management™ system have reported reductions in blood utilization from 13% to 37% with cumulative cost savings in excess of $50 million through the reduction of unnecessary transfusions while improving patient care and increasing patient safety (view client list).

Phase I: Strategic Blood Management™ Audit and Benchmarking

The process begins with a comprehensive audit and benchmarking of current blood management practices in order to identify performance gaps and areas of risk exposure. These performance gaps are in relation to benchmarks, best practices and regulatory mandates. The audit also includes a BloodStat™ blood utilization scorecard for the top blood use DRGs along with peer-to-peer blood utilization performance data. To help generate understanding and buy-in from clinical staff, blood management CME lectures by the audit team are also built into the site visit.

Phase II: Strategic Blood Management™ Program Development
Program development is facilitated with a custom Strategic Blood Management™ implementation plan to build a sustainable infrastructure for appropriate blood utilization. This comprehensive plan addresses specific gaps uncovered in the audit as well as the programmatic aspects of blood management. The Strategic Blood Management™ process also employs a change team approach using key “players” within the organization. The capstone exercise of this phase is an implementation seminar involving SHG staff and hospital stakeholders.

Phase III: Strategic Blood Management™ Program Support
Process improvement projects and educational opportunities identified by the change team are supported with internal and external resources, including BloodStat™ dashboard reports and the Blood eManagement™ learning system. This system provides a variety of educational opportunities for clinical staff through a web-based interface and includes distance learning as well as direct support options.
